FAQ

1. What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?

WBC was first used in Japan in 1978 by Dr. Toshiro Yamauchi as a means of treating rheumatoid arthritis. The researchers were astonished when test studies began producing other beneficial results beyond Rheumatoid arthritis pain management. The cold therapy is administered by a Cryosauna which is developed and manufactured here in America. Sessions range from 2 minutes to 3 minutes as this is the amount of time needed for skin receptors to signal the brain to produce positive biological responses.

2. Is there any scientific research on WBC?

3. Is Whole Body Cryotherapy safe and tested?

4. How long can I expect to be in the clinic?

5. What do I have to wear while inside the Cryosauna?

Many research studies have been conducted showing positive benefits and verifying its safety. Around 2010, WBC found its way over to America due to its growing popularity within the athletic community and the backing of many athletic trainers and medical practitioners. In 2015, well respected orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, founder of the ASMI, came out in full support of WBC.

Yes. WBC has been used in Europe for over 30 years without any severe adverse reactions ever recorded as long as the proper protocols are followed.

One of the greatest advantages of WBC is how convenient it is. After an individual's first session, it shouldn't take the individual any longer than ten to fifteen minutes from start to finish.

Males only need to wear their underwear, while females don’t need to wear anything (bra optional but no underwire). It is okay to wear minimal clothing such as bathing suits or undergarments, but the effects of WBC work best when more skin surface area is exposed. We will provide a robe, gloves, sock and slippers to protect the extremities.
Lebron James Cryotherapy

Did You Know: Many Professional Athletes such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Davis Love and Jordan Spieth use WBC as a regular part of their training regimen

6. How often do you recommend I use the Cryosauna?

7. After the session is over, how will I feel?

8. If Whole Body Cryotherapy has been around for 30 years why haven't I heard of it?

9. Is Whole Body Cryotherapy specifically for athletes?

We recommend clients initially take 10 treatments in close succession within their first 30 days to maximize results. There after you can take 2-3 treatments per week to maintain. Some clients may experience noticeable differences after just one treatment, but optimal results typically occur when 10 sessions are completed within your first 3-4 weeks. At WholeCryo, we help by recommending a certain amount of sessions dependent upon why an individual is seeking WBC. However, once you experience the increased energy, better sleep, metabolic boost, and the rush of endorphins, you will want to make Cryo a part of your lifestyle.

During each session the body releases endorphins which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The mood-enhancing effects from each session can last for days. Many individuals claim feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

It has been around for 30 years in Europe, where it has become very popular among the athletic community, specifically the Rugby and Football communities. Europe tends to be ahead of the curve when it comes to innovation and it wasn't until around 2010 that many athletes here in America began experiencing the wonderful effects of WBC. Since then it has quickly spread and the field is growing significantly. If Texas and Florida are any indication, the WBC industry is just getting started.

Cryotherapy is for anybody who would like to feel less pain naturally, have reduced muscle soreness, experience better performance, enhance their mood, improved their skin, and burn calories, most anyone will benefit from WBC.

Tony Robbins Cryotherapy

10. Is Nitrogen gas safe?

11. Will I feel discomfort during the treatment?

12. What activities can I perform after a session of Whole Body Cryotherapy?

13. Can't I get the same effect from an ice bath?

14. Are there any health contraindications to Cryotherapy?

Did You Know: Motivational speaker Tony Robbins is huge proponet of Cryotherapy, he owns his own machine at home and yet still finds the nearest Cryotherapy clinics when he is off traveling around the world speaking

Liquid nitrogen is 100 percent harmless. Nitrogen is a non flammable and non toxic gas. The nitrogen being used to cool the Cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (78% of it). During the session, due to the design of the Cryosauna, the client breathes the air in the room as their face is out of the Cryosauna.

Many people are pleasantly surprised at how tolerable the treatment is and explain that the session is very invigorating. We also provide gloves, socks, and slippers to help with the comfort of the session.

The great thing about WBC is that just five minutes after a session, an individual can partake in any physical activity or event.  Since the treatment is dry and not wet like a typical ice bath, an individual's muscles will not feel numb.

It is not possible to achieve the same effects with an ice bath. The temperature of an ice bath (30 F to 50 F) can't come anywhere close to the temperature inside of the Cryosauna (-190 F to -270 F.) The biological effects that happen from the Cryotherapy session are simply way more powerful than any other cold modality out there. Not to mention WBC is a whole lot quicker than an ice bath taking a total of only 180 seconds.

Safety is the most important concern to the team at WholeCryo. We cannot permit certain individuals to enter the Cryosauna due to biological reasons, medical diseases, or lack of research testing,  here is the list of conditions that will prevent use of WBC:

Untreated Hypertension: (Fluctuations in blood pressure during a session result in an increase of 10mm/Hg Systolic, but reverses once session is over)

Systolic Blood Pressure above 170 mm/Hg or Diastolic Blood Pressure above 100 mm/Hg
Pregnancy

Congestive Heart Failure

Heart Attack within the previous 6 months

Unstable Angina Pectoris

Pacemaker

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or known circulatory dysfunction (blood clots)

COPD

Severe Anemia

Cold Allergenic Phenomenon

Seizure disorders

Hyperhidrosis (heavy perspiration)

What to expect for your first Whole Body Cryo session:

Step 1    Head to the private changing room where you will disrobe (minimal clothing recommended, men must wear underwear) and put on 1 pair of socks, gloves, shoes and robe all of which will be provided. Please remember to remove any metallic items from your body below your ears(necklaces, rings, piercings, under garments with exposed metal) and place them safely in your dressing room.

Step 2    Step into the cryosauna . Our trained staff will be there to guide you through your session. Once in the cryosauna, you will then hand your robe to the operator. Privacy is very important to us at WholeCryo, we will only see your face, as the rest of your body will be concealed in the cryosauna.

Step 3   The operator will begin your session- cool dry air will circulate inside the chamber for just 2-3 minutes. During this time your skin surface temperature will drop significantly triggering a natural reaction called vasoconstriction.

Step 4
The operator will remain with you during the treatment, checking your comfort level every 10-15 seconds.

Step 5    After 2-3 minutes, the cryosauna will stop cooling the chamber. The operator will hand you your robe so that you may cover up prior to exiting the cryosauna.

Step 6    Upon exiting the cryosauna, the body vasodilates and the enriched, oxygenated blood from your body's core is sent back out to the skin surface tissues, muscle tissues and joints.

Step 7     Many customers feel an immediate "Cryo Rush", a warm tingling sensation throughout the body, a heightened sense of alertness and general euphoria similar to a "Runners High". Please return to the dressing room and change back in to your regular clothing and enjoy the rest of your day!

With Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) the body is exposed to ultra-low temperatures (-200 to -240 F). The client is placed in a cryogenic sauna/chamber for a short duration of 1.5-3 minutes which lowers the client's skin surface temperature significantly and stimulates receptors.

This treatment was first utilized in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Studies conducted over the last two decades in Europe have established WBC as a powerful modality for inflammation reduction and injuries.

Professional athletes have discovered WBC as a powerful treatment to decrease recovery  time and increase athletic performance.  Although Whole Body Cryotherapy originated in Japan, it was a group of Polish scientists who took the idea and made Whole Body Cryotherapy the physical therapy it is today.  The Olympic rehabilitation center in Spala, Poland opened in May 2000 and has been used as a training and injury rehabilitation center for many athletes.

In the Cryosauna, clients are protected with socks, gloves, and slippers.  Clothing worn during the treatment is minimal: for women clothing is optional while for men genitals have to be covered with cotton underwear.  During the 1.5-3min session the average skin temperature drops to 10 °C (50 °F), while the coldest skin temperature can be 0 °C (32 °F). The core body temperature remains unchanged throughout the process, however, it may drop slightly afterwards.

Clients report that the experience is invigorating and improves a variety of conditions such as psychological stress, insomnia, rheumatism, muscle and joint pain, and various skin conditions.*

How Can You Benefit From Cryotherapy?

Recovery:  Cryotherapy promotes anti-inflammatory properties, which decrease soreness in a postworkout state. Full-body cryotherapy can do more in three minutes than a 60-minute massage. That enables you to recover from your workouts, no matter the intensity. Benefits include, inflammation relief, reduction of muscle soreness, less pain from sore joints and blood flow restoration.

For competitive athletes, ice baths are the traditional method used to recover from a workout or competition. However, they require recovery time—up to a day before they can resume practice. But with whole-body cryotherapy, athletes recover in less time so they can resume their training faster.

Repair: From chilling away fat to smoothing wrinkles and erasing spider veins, cryotherapy techniques are being used throughout the beauty industry to address aging problems that used to require surgery. Whole body cryotherapy has been shown to stimulate collagen production, resulting in the rejuvenation of aging skin and reduction of cellulite.

Each session can consume as many as 400 to 800 calories that, when combined with a good diet and fitness, can aid in weight loss. Because cryotherapy is non-invasive, it offers benefits that far outweigh surgery and the use of medication. People who use cryotherapy say the experience makes them feel refreshed and invigorated. Users claim a host of benefits, both physical and mental. Because a cryotherapy session takes just three minutes, it’s easy to fit into a busy schedule.

Revitalize:  Looking for that extra spurt of energy prior to a workout, competitive match, yoga class or other activity?

Cryotherapy lowers the body’s surface skin temperature from approximately 90.5 F to around 32 F for about 2-3 minutes. Cooling is achieved by way of Nitrogen mist, which gently surrounds the body at -250 to -300 F. During this process, receptors in the skin send signals to the brain to release endorphins and beneficial biochemicals. The blood becomes oxygenated, accelerating beneficial results.

When the immune system is activated in this fashion, the body experiences an energy boost which lasts up to eight hours. Athletes enjoy increased endurance with faster recovery and healing.
